Solomon Northup was a free black man who lived in the northern United States in the 1800s, he was working as a violinist, and was kidnapped in 1841, at age 33. Two men, Brown and Hamilton, offer him a two week job as a musician if he will travel to Washington, D.C., with them. Once there, they drug Northup and delivered him to a slave pen owned by James Burch. Northup is sold into slavery in the south, he is shipped to New Orleans along with other who have been captured. A slave trader named Freeman gives Northup the identity of Platt. Private Trip comes from Tennessee as a runaway slave to fight for the Union.
