Private Security Field: A Case Study

Decent Essays
I believe that a career in the private security field is an excellent choice. I may be slightly biased since I have worked as a loss prevention professional for the last 15 years. I started in loss prevention after working in retail for about 5 years. There were several positions changing in the store I was working in and I was asked if I would be interested in working as a loss prevention associate. I took the position and immediately felt as though it was the right position for me. After a few months I was promoted to a store loss prevention manager and managed a staff of two loss prevention associates. A few years later I became a loss prevention manager at another company with a larger staff of four loss prevention associates. After that position I transition to a new company as a district loss prevention trainer and was able to travel through the Mid-Atlantic area and would train all newly hired loss prevention detectives from South Carolina up to the Washington, DC area. …show more content…
During this time I also gained my additional certification as “Loss Prevention Qualified (LPQ)” (LPF, 2015)from the loss prevention foundation. I also was able to become certified in interview dishonest associates by becoming “W-Z” (Wicklander & Zulawski, 2015) certified in interview and interrogation techniques. These industry recognized designations allowed me to be able to further my career as transitioned to my current role of a regional loss prevention supervisor. I now cover over 20 stores and am responsible of CCTV and alarm installs, training all employees on loss prevention issues, and identifying and resolving theft from internal or external

One of the most visible law enforcement agencies that has drawn me to the homeland security realm is the Florida Highway Patrol. In the past I have attend several job fairs just to see what job opportunity are out there. Florida Patrol Officers were always on the scene looking clean cut, in shape and professional. Even their patrol cars that seemed to be always parked in the front of the different building were clean and had a nice shine. I guess I can relate to their mission by my military discipline and organization structure.…

A career in corrections appeals to me for a number of reasons. I enjoy working with other people and excel working with people from different backgrounds other than my own. While I was in the Army there was strong demand for a structured work environment. This is something I desire in a career and feel that corrections as other professions in law enforcement demand high level of structure and expect nothing less. To attain this expectation requires individuals to be highly disciplined, so they are able to give 100 percent every moment they are not only on the clock, but when you’re on your own time as well.…

Each year, an estimated 100,000 fake college degrees are sold in the United States, according to George Gollin, a board member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (Tutton, 2010). Certainly, this poses a monumental problem for hiring managers and is demonstrative of a greater problem of misrepresentation in the labor supply. In a tense economy with pronounced competition between applicants for gainful employment, some individuals resort to lying on their applications about things like their date of birth, college major, criminal history, and graduation status (Gomez-Meija, Balkin, & Cardy, 2012). All told, these lies amount to fraud from every angle, and damage businesses and consumers alike. Given that around 30 percent of job…
