In studies done, for-profit clinics for dialysis had an 8% higher chance of patients dying than those treated in not for profit clinics. The reasoning for this is most likely due to shorter treatment times in for-profit clinics to reduce prices, along with fewer trained staff, (CUPE, 2013). Another fact to prove that public health care clinics provide better care would be that “Adults had 2 percent higher death rates in for-profit hospitals, while the infant mortality rate was 10 percent higher. Switching to a for-profit hospital system in Canada would mean 2,200 more deaths each year – more than deaths from suicide, colon cancer or car accidents” (CUPE, 2013). Also, for-profit clinics generally need higher profit margins to satisfy shareholders, while public clinics can use that extra money on better health care. (CUPE, 2013)
