Private Duty Nurse Interview Paper

Improved Essays
For this assignment I chose to interview a private duty nurse who only has one patient. Throughout this paper, for the sake of confidentiality I will be referring to the private duty nurse that I interviewed as Danielle, and her patient as Racquel. Danielle is the primary care provider for Racquel who is a critically ill child with special needs. Raquel is a 10 year old girl who was born with spinal bifida and attends school part-time. Some of Danielle's job duties consist of taking care of and attending to most of Racquel's medical needs on a daily basis, providing in-home monitoring and accompanying her at school and during out of town visits. The educational qualifications needed for this position is having a nursing license. The population she works with is directly with Racquel's family which she has pretty much become a member of as well as a severe and profound school for children ages 4-21. When asked what a typical day of her job looks like she responded by saying that "there is no such thing as a typical day for me! Mainly because there is a lot of variance in the day and the routine depending on the needs of the environment. However, our classroom usually has up to 4 students if all are in attendance, and being that we only attend half a day, their is usually an activity already taking place so once we arrive to the school and get off the bus a she would join in on what ever activity is taking place, and interact with the other students, paraprofessional and teacher, while I sit in the background and observe her behavior and response." As mentioned before working in this field does not have a standard routine and can sometimes be unpredictable depending on what is happening on that particular day. On somedays Raquel's responses and behavior are subject to change as a result of being on certain medication or if she just may not be having a good day. Danielle had a difficult time coming uo with an answer when asked what the most frustrating part of her job was. After thinking about she responby saying" There really is nothing that I can say negatively about my job, because Racquel is such a great kid and I love caring for her, but I can say that the most challenging thing for me is watching Racquel not do, or answer to something that I know she knows while she's in class because I can not intervene or encourage to try to get the answer out of her." Danielle was very ecstatic to share her answer about what part of her job brings her the greatest joy. During this answer she expressed how much she values the opportunity to be a part of Racquel's life and being a part of such an incredible journey that is motivating even for her. It was very encouraging to hear how highly she spoke of Racquel. As she shared stories about …show more content…
With this kind of way of thinking the best interest of the child will always be taken into consideration. “Once you learn to appreciate small victories, there is no need for a finish line.” After speaking with Miss Danielle I am truly motivated and is looking forward to having the opportunity to hopefully coming into contact with and being a part of such a special journey such as this one as a future

When figuring out how to conduct my interview it was challenging and also tricky coming up with who I would interview and also the type of questions I was going to ask this individual. As I was pondering who to interview I remembered how my older sister was in the same major as me. I look up to my older sister so it was an awesome experience for me to get the opportunity to interview her and learn more about my major. Since I haven’t been able to learn anything about nursing yet, because OU does a 2+2 year program, it was exciting to gain more knowledge from my sister about all the interesting tasks that nurses get to experience, typical first year assignments, and how communication is a vital role in nursing. When looking over the questions and answers from my interview it was clear that patience and compassion were a valuable aspect of nursing.…

    Nurse Staffing Paper

Since 2005, without much success, the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) has been encouraging hospital chief executive officers and/or administrators to set a baseline minimum staffing standard or create policy to protect patient safety (Minnesota Nurses Association, 2017). In 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) implemented a new model of healthcare delivery and payment that was designed to improve quality and reduce costs, but as a result, cost control pressures have been put on nurse staffing levels in order to reduce nurse labor hours and their associated costs (Avalere, 2015). With a goal of making a case for sufficient nurse staffing levels and/or models, the American Nurses Association (ANA) teamed up with Avalere to conduct a targeted review of published literature, government reports, and other publicly available evaluations of nurse staffing and patient outcomes (Avalere, 2015). Their key findings with appropriate nurse staffing included: nurse staffing models should consider the number of nurses, the nurse-to-patient ratios and staffing should be adjusted to account for unit and shift level factors; helps to achieve clinical and economic improvement in patient care; improves patient satisfaction and patient quality of life; decreases/reduces: medical and medication errors, patient mortality,…

Medicine has always been something I could see myself enjoying. I was initially inspired by my older sister who aspired to be a regristered nurse, and then I decided that medicine was a path I wanted to go down as well. However, when I came to college I wasn’t doing great in my natural science classes so I got decided to to into the Aging Studies field where academically I did so much better. This took me off my track to go to medical school and become a doctor but I was determined to get back on track.…
