The Secrecy of Addiction
People who abuse substances often do so in private to avoid being found out. They want and many times need to avoid the scrutiny of family, friends and co-workers so as to not cause themselves undue problems and confrontations. They also try to avoid being spotted in public due to possible legal issues related to the illegal use of drugs or one's actions while under the influence. Even in recovery, there is a stigma associated with one's past reliance on substances to make it through a day. In order to allow themselves the best opportunity establish a lasting recovery, privacy and confidentiality become important issues.
Much like a regular hospital, patient and doctor/counselor confidentiality is a must in a private alcohol rehab environment. At the Stepping Stone Center for Rehab, confidentiality is a key factor in getting patients to open up about their disease. They are being asked to speak frankly about private matters that could cause problems for them in the wrong hands.
