One shouldn't have to sacrifice their personal information to be online. Credit card numbers shouldn't be required to access information about a topic being studied. They should not be, but they sometimes are. The reason people believe privacy is dead, is because they have killed it themselves. There is a problem with laziness and lack of initiative in that, but the bigger problem is what is accessed through a simple name and email address. People find it shocking when their names and numbers and personal emails end up on black-market websites and their pictures on sketchy ads on the side of Facebook; but with people willingly posting and giving up this information, there is no way to have a security blanket from their faces and names to be stolen and crafted into a new identity or alter ego on the vast realm of the
