Privacy In Social Media

I got quite interesting feedback from the people I interviewed and the survey was also able to shed some light on some previously held opinions about privacy on the internet. The Answers I got varied with age. The older respondents were more concerned about their privacy on the internet compared to the younger people. I believe this was due to the fact that the older people may have had more important information gathered over the years than the young individuals. Another reason would be previous experiences with their privacy being breached and now were more cautious. Despite the answers being different there was a sense of privacy being a very significant factor in one’s activities online. In regards to gender there was little variance in the respondents answers. Both genders were similarly concerned about their privacy. Most of the people interviewed were very aware of the stakes at hand if their privacy was infringed …show more content…
However, there were two respondents that reported their bank accounts were tampered with. I believe social media privacy violations were such myriad because they tend to hold so much information about individuals. In today’s social media profiles one can be able to retrieve peoples addresses, the schools they attended, places they visited, family members the list is endless. In light of this, we now see why social media is a hot spot for privacy infringement. Everything about a person has been reduced to only a push of a button. For those who have fallen victim of infringement their social media accounts have been destroyed and their lives ruined. One of the respondents said that their pictures were used to catfish, meaning a person used their identity on social media and pretended to be them in order to gain something. A trend that has now been growing rampant over the years, due to numerous posting of picture by individuals and the capability of photo

I will be drawing arguments and research results from theorists such as Monahan (2011), Bullingham and Vasconcelos (2013), and DeVries (2003) in order to argue the amount of lateral surveillance practiced in the gaming world (in other words: lack of privacy) that can be associated with the idea of users wanting to not only present their “best self” to those watching, but to also prove their “best self”, and be the best “best self.” With the advancements of technology throughout the years, lateral surveillance opportunities emerged within the online world, and had especially grown in popularity through online video game platforms. The idea that this peer-to-peer communication has flourished so effectively puts concern on both the sudden invasive powers users have on one another, and on…

Citizens that are a threat to the country, are the only people who are at risk of their privacy. . Within the book , “Online Privacy,” author Stephen Currie explains that, “ [The Government] in the United States rarely exercise these powers against people who are not already under the suspicion of committing crimes”(60). Currie is trying to get the idea across that American citizens have a very little chance of getting their privacy compromised, because they are not a threat to the well being of the country. This shows that even though the government has the right to access one's private information, does not mean they will monitor it. Critics may say, however, that the government can abuse this power to access the digital privacy of its citizens.…

When those of privileged economic status want to uphold their privacy in the future, they’ll easily be able to pay companies (probably of which are the same that collect our information) that will protect them against personal data collection. Those who are not so privileged will be left to tiptoe around the internet, hoping their online behavioral profiles won’t get into the wrong hands to be used against them. The internet, a place in which the playing field used to be totally level, has never been at a higher risk for becoming a replication of our current and equally problematic class…

These findings are intriguing because the majority of users are in either one of two camps: appalled or apathetic. It is very rare to find someone who is naive enough to wholeheartedly trust the companies and/or random people on the internet. This is an interesting because before I looked at my survey results, I believed that most people did not know about the dangers the internet poses to an individual’s privacy. But as I went through my collected data, I found that most of my survey takers were at the very least apathetic about the intrusion to their privacy the internet possess, if not angry or worried. This may be because those that took my survey were all college aged people who grew up with the web.…

Whenever signing up with a telecommunication company, clients are required to provide personal information, therefore reducing the amount of control. As depicted by Steinfeld (2016)…
