For example, when someone steals a T-Shirt from their local Wal-Mart; Wal-Mart has the thief carry a sign saying “honk three times if you think stealing is wrong” and many do honk. This public humiliation makes any thief feel guilty of their actions. Half of thief’s that have been publicly shamed do not commit the same crime twice. Public Shaming is a better standby because it disciplines and engages many do not want being humiliated. Public Shame is a better standby for imprisonment because penalty is more expensive for society to pay for non-violent crimes. The United States prison facilities are overloaded with inmates. Jeff Jacoby’s essay “Bring Back Flogging” made me truly think about the United States Justice System. Although I was originally appalled at his notion to bring back public whipping, I began to realize the fatal flaws our criminal system has. Although bringing back Puritan punishment may not be the best step for America, the path we are taking now with our criminals is not only wasting money but truly not helping anyone. In colonial times, the Puritans needed some system to keep order in their community.…

I believe that the author, Jeff Jacoby, made many good points as to why the regular system isn’t working to decrease the number of criminals, however not enough was said about why flogging should be brought back. First of all, I believe flogging is inhumane and a completely outdated method of punishing criminals. The writer believes that a public whipping would humiliate criminals enough to not want to commit a crime again. However I believe that it’s just a more advanced way of spanking a child, hoping it will teach them a lesson. I personally don’t think a one time public flogging would change a criminal's way’s any more than some jail time would.…

Much the same as fundamental preparing, training camps accentuate drill and service and physical movement. By and large, boot camps target youthful, passive juveniles with restricted criminal history. Boot camps are to a great extent fleeting projects enduring 90 to 180 days. Correctional institute is that penal institution where juveniles are held temporarily so that they learn to behave. After watching the video, it is obvious that such efforts are not getting any successful and young offenders keep on hurting themselves and fighting with the police officers to leave that place. Studies show that there are very very few programs which may have some positive effect in the prevention of future delinquency like the “Future soldier program”. In future soldier program, the physical power and mental strength of juveniles can be used to turn them into law enforcers rather than law breakers. But, there are very few kids who can and who want to participate in this program.…

Within the topic of criminal corrections in the United States, there are many practices or programs that have been created in order to possibly rehabilitate, enforce order, or deter a person or persons from committing the same crime(s) again. One of them that has struck many as a very positive program is boot camps for any offender including juvenile offenders. Boot camps are one variation of shock incarceration. Shock incarceration is a short period of incarceration followed by a sentence reduction(Clear, 2006, p.229). Boot camps however, are physically rigorous, disciplined, and demanding regimens emphasizing conditioning, education and job training.…

In the last 40 years, incarceration in the United States has reached epidemic proportions. We have the highest incarceration rate in the world; we hold 5% of the world’s population, but house 25% of the world’s prisoners (Kelly 2015). The use of incarceration has gradually become a more acceptable and more used form of punishment. As a result, our prison population is overflowing with offenders ranging from petty theft criminals to violent offenders. As cited in the textbook, purposes of our justice system should be retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation, (Clear, Reisig, & Cole 2016, p.72-73) but we focus far too much on punishment first and rehabilitation second, if ever.…
