One of the unthinkable things I have come across while writing my paper is the existence of prison labor, this is baffling for a number of reasons. First off, prison labor is massive, the estimates put it as around 1,000,000 laborers working for slightly less than two hundred companies. With that scope in mind, I come to the second reason this is astonishing, information about prison labor is not made public. This means that all articles about its scope are sheer conjecture. Third, and this probably goes without saying, prisoners are not protected by workers rights.…
In 2013 over one and a half million people have 3 meals a day, a warm bed, shelter, free exercise, and free entertainment. Welcome to prison, a place that almost rewards you for doing something wrong. One million federal state prisons, and seven hundred and fifty local prisons, each costing about seventy three million dollars for one prison. Why? Well fun fact, you are paying for them.…
Summary: In chapter nine of the book Kevin Wright talks about the private prison system, and the important changes it makes from the traditional public prison system. Recently the American prison system has come under fire for being very cost-expensive and for operating in a very illegitimate manor. Many of the problems that public prisons present are overcrowding, insufficient programs, racial conflicts, inmate violence, and poor correctional staff; most of these problems are addressed and fixed in the private prison system. Some criminal justice scholars currently argue against the private prison system stating that it would become too big and lucrative, and also saying the current system works best.…
The privatized prison system in the united states can be termed massive and incredible, to an extent that it is able to generate a turnover of about $74 billion, and this is way much above gross domestic product of 133 full independent nations. Prison privatization has proved lucrative, and the prisons themselves operate as businesses and as well are contracted by the government to offer such services. This has brought stability to the government which had been overwhelmed by huge bills that were always presented to the government budgeting system by the justice and drug laws department (Simon et al. 5).…
Do they operate in an ethical/humane way? Security Concerns? Questions like these will be discussed in this paper in a Pro/Con fashion. This paper will address the concerns one may have for For-Profit Prisons, whether they be for or against For-Profit Prisons.…
The second policy initiative that this memorandum proposes to positively impact mass incarceration is ASC (A Second Chance) which deals with reentry. Fiscal savings from the sentencing aspects of the New Orleans plan will be invested in programs to lower recidivism and help convicts get back on their feet. In the state of Louisiana, convicts will be eligible for welfare programs and student loans, encouraging ex-cons to pursue a college education will be a priority for entry and welfare programs are necessary to help convicts stay off the street. Public housing laws that allow discrimination will be abolished and reformed so that prisons will stop being the main housing program for the urban poor and homeless convicts will stop reverting to…
Private prison employees often have stock in their company or receive some type of profit-incentive, and as a result, this profit motive can directly influence their professional decisions (i.e. longer sentences and no goodtime) (Anderson, 2009). Since staffing accounts for 70% of the prison budge, private prisons often cut costs in labor (Blakely & Bumphus, 2004). Private prisons employee 15% fewer guards per prison than public prisoners (Anderson, 2009). As a result, violence among inmates and assaults on correctional officers is more frequent in private prisons.…
The Changes in the Canadian correctional system has evolved and gone through several institutional improvements for incarcerated inmates. Since the early 1900’s Canada went through a series of faces phases which were considered harsh punishment for criminal offenders to a program that resulted into a correctional process that was more humane. for offenders. This research will discuss the history of Canada’s correctional system and provide an overview for the establishment of the Federal and Provincial correction facilities throughout their country and the pros and cons of the correctional system (Correctional Service Canada, 2010). Prior to the end of the 19th century, the correctional system in Canada was only focused on punishing criminals.…
Prison systems cost money to keep active, and the more prisoners a building holds, the more money it will cost. Furthermore, prisons take money from education and public safety. Yet despite the major flaws with the prison system, and although crime has decreased in the past several decades, incarceration rates have nearly quadrupled (“Criminal”). Because of this, prison costs have increased, and continue to rise. In fact, in America, about $70 billion are spent on corrections per year (ibid).…
This large scale imprisonment of American citizens may have beneficial monetary factors, but merely bandages a gaping wound that is significantly similar to modern day slavery. Prisons within the United States need to be reformed from the inside out, allowing prisoners a second chance at life and focusing much more on reformation instead of incarceration. Prison privatization…
The Goal of Private Prisons: A Scheme for Profit The operations of private prison show that their success is dependent upon housing the maximum number of inmates. In order to fill beds at private facilities the private corporations lobby for stronger drug and immigration laws along with longer sentences to accompany these laws. These new laws result in the United States having five percent of the world population but housing twenty-five percent of the world’s prisoners. (Liptak, 2008)…
There is 34% more rearrests than those kept in the youth justice system. Adult prisons don’t help deter teens from committing crimes again. It provides less rehabilitation. It’s not the place for juveniles to grow maturely. These juveniles don’t have a strong mind to overcome the hardships in adult prisons.…
Similarly, private prisons have control problems with their inmates. Private facilities house diverse prisoner populations in both small and large facilities. That plays apart in common inmate-on-inmate assaults, inmate-on-staff assaults, minor disturbances, riots, and escapes (Allen et al 287). Privately owned prisons spark the interests of public business men and women. At the state level there are only three major beneficiaries the government, taxpayers, and offenders, however, with privately owned prisons the beneficiaries include stockholders, investors, hedge funds, lobbyists, upper-level managers, corrupt public employees, politicians, and rainmakers, all looking for the biggest profit (Allen et al 289).…
The Problem with For-Profit Prison Private or for profit prisons are facilities that are contracted with the local, state or federal government to operate correctional facilities. In the 1980’s President Reagan said that government was the problem and proposed privatizing many institutions (Selman & Leighton, 2010). According to the American Civil Liberties Union, currently about 6% of state prisoners and 16% of federal inmates are in a privatized institutions. The most common argument in favor of for-profit prisons is that private industry is far more efficient than government and thus can operate facilities more more cheaply than the government.…
The privatization concept has been used as a solution to manage the congestion of prison population at a lower cost. However, the results of this approach fail to meet up with humanitarian and social problems which are present in these private facilities. One could argue that the private prisons rather perpetuate the vast increase of prisoners (Anderson, 2009). Nevertheless, this does have a negative impact on the care of these prisoners in rehabilitating and treating them effectively due to motivation of revenue. The quality of care reduces drastically, since these companies strive to reduce costs by any means.…
