I’m Priscila Obledo Navarro and I was born on a Tuesday, September 26, 2000, in Berkeley, Ca. I was born with long hair and a darker skin color than what I have today. My parents would tell me that I looked like a troll when I was born. I do not remember much of my childhood, just bits, and pieces of it. My parents told me that I was a shy girl around strangers but very crazy when I’m with family members. One memory that would stand out to me would be learning to ride a horse by myself. Whenever I remember something, I would see it in a third person point of view; I’m not sure why. I would ride our horse around in a circle while my dad was holding the horse with a rode. That was until my dad decided that I was ready to ride the horse by myself. As an eight-year-old, I was terrified when my dad untied the horse from the rope. Once the horse was released and started to pick up its pace, I instinctively pulled the rains to the point where the horse slowed down. My dad noticed how fast I acted and that I was a natural. From then on, I was allowed to ride the horse by myself and I also gave my family members a ride.

Davis High School and I am a member of the Health Career Academy since Freshman year. Being in the Health Career Academy has helped me learn many things from medical abbreviations to CPR. As Seniors, we are able to enroll in ROP (Regional Occupational Program) and go to hospitals. I was able to work at Doctors Medical Center, third floor south; which are manly elderly people. I did enjoy my experience on the third floor but I would not want to work with elderly people anytime soon. I get to see C-sections and it warms my heart seeing the newborns and getting the news that there are no complications. This has made me want to pursue my goal to become a Pediatrician even

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

I took the Certified Nursing Assistant class my junior year of high school, which had me working in a nursing home my fall semester and a hospital my spring semester, two experiences that exposed me at an impressionable age to what a career in medicine exactly entails. The following year, I took the Pharmacy Technician class in order to branch a little out of the medical field and explore pharmacy, but upon completion of the course, I felt that a career in medicine was the best for me; from my Pharmacy Technician experience, however, I learned valuable skills about working in a workplace with other bright minds in close proximity, which would prove beneficial in any career in medicine.
