Introduction Chapter 4 provides an overview of the functions of leadership and how the important incorporation of leadership leads to the success of a company. When there is proper leadership implemented in a company, the organization’s goals are clearer, more concise, and easier to follow. Although leadership is a function of management, the roles of leaders and managers differ in several areas. “To become a leader, a manager must develop an understanding of the nature of leadership” (Satterlee, 2013, p. 102). Managers evolve into true leaders when they understand elements of leadership, receive developmental opportunities, as well as willingly implement leadership concepts that help them effectively influence others. Character relates to one’s personal qualities, along with one’s moral commitments and values; therefore, one’s philosophy or principles reflect what one values while character is an active demonstration of what one values (Gini & Roland, 2014). The principle is rigid in that adapting to a specific project or person is difficult and change only occurs when there has been a shift in philosophy by the organization. Furthermore, the theory also hypothesizes that differences exist between leaders and managers. Managers govern for stability, have subordinates under their control, adopt well-defined short-term objectives, focus on details, and are task oriented. Leaders direct the overall process, have followers, concentrate on long-term vision, set the direction of the organization, and are inclined to inspire people in the organization to attain results (Carr, Johnson & Corkwell, …show more content…
Proverbs 11:14 (NIV) states, “Without wise leadership, a nation falls.” Leadership is defined not only in the amount of power, ability and control that the leader enjoys, but it is also defined in the personal characteristics and effective decision making of those leaders. Many avenues exist and many theories abound as to the best way forward for these traits to be defined and utilized.
