Ethics is highly significant in our society today. Ethical standards, dilemmas, and conflicts are located in just about every aspect of our everyday lives, such examples being within careers, school careers, parenting a child, or even within nonprofit organizations. No matter where you go you will most likely come across ethics and standards to be met in order to remain the most ethic person you can be. One of the most strict professions when it comes too Ethics is Psychology. It is a positive thing that this Association does have a detailed Ethical Code because this field itself is very important and imperative for the betterment of mental health in our society. Psychologists are expected to know and abide by this code on a regular basis and it is highly critical that they do for the safety and well-being of not only their career but also for any patient/ client that walks through their office door. Upon researching further into the American Psychological Association’s Code of Ethics one of the many ethical standards that is extremely important is Standard Four which defines all the different areas in which a Psychologist must maintain Privacy and Confidentiality. According to the APA Code of Ethics Psychologists have an obligation to ensure privacy and confidentiality to maintain a professional or scientific relationship. Not only is it highly crucial that they keep this type of relationship for the profession sake due to the right of Privacy suggested in the Constitution, but it also is a means to maintain trust with the client. Although in the United States if one is a psychologist, they must obey the theoretical level of their code of ethics in order to maintain a license. But it is very interesting upon researching the study done by MacKay and O’Neill how some of these twenty psychologist either disagree or find some more things unethical or some in the actually code to not be ethical. Examining just two of the 10 standards in the APA code of Ethics, we really get an understanding as to how important this profession really is. It is a theoretical level of ethics because it is so strict and difficult to abide by in normal standards but in the professional realm of psychology it is rather practical and attainable because with hard effort, and the heart to care for clients, a psychologist should be able to do their duties
