Promoting Nursing as a Profession.
This essay will underpin the principles of what nursing is and the role of the nurse within the mental health, exploring professional regulations, legal and ethical frameworks within health and social care. Additionally this essay will demonstrate the values and skills to develop personally and professionally within a nursing practice as a result of these regulations, frameworks and experience in order to progress towards competency in a lifelong learning career.
The role of nursing has evidently changed throughout centuries. Mental Health as a profession has significantly changed throughout history, with the profession shaping new regulations and laws, education, treatment and more.

According to the Welsh government ‘580 patients (41%) were detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 and other legislation, an increase of 14 (2%) from 2015 and 52 (10%) from 2006’ (March 2016). Mental Health Measures is a legislation put in place by the Welsh government to ensure that the various mental health services in Wales centre their care and guidance based on an individual’s needs. Mental Health Measures (2010) has four elements which reflect mental health care, one of which is ‘give people who receive secondary mental health services the right to have a Care and Treatment Plan.’ Something which the NMC code of conduct encourages quoting ‘act in partnership with those receiving care, helping them to access relevant health and social care, information and support when they need it’. (NMC Jan 2015) Therefore, this element of MHM (2010) will have the greatest impact on those receiving secondary care as care and treatment should aim to be person focused so that those individuals who have more severe mental health needs can have more complex care where as others may not. The NMC ‘set standards of education, training, conduct and performance’ in order for midwives and nurses to work to these standards therefore producing high quality care. The nursing and midwifery council created the code, a professional code of conduct that all nurses and midwifes should endorse. The NMC is really important during a nursing career from student to employee as they set professional requirements. This can be shown through four motifs, prioritise people, practice effectively, preserve safety and promote professionalism and trust. As a result of not following these themes an individual can face being questioned through fitness to practice or even the high courts. Consequently losing their registration and more importantly not respecting the key principles in healthcare ethics. Many nurses can refer to Beauchamp and Childress who suggest that respect for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice are principles that can be used during a predicament can help a nurse provide the right cause of action. Beauchamp’s and Childress suggestions can relate to the NMC code.
