Principles of cognitive learning theory and knowledge production Piaget believed that children learn by playing. He believed if they played in a developmentally appropriate environment that they are able to learn and develop. That is if the child is able to relate their self to in order to make sense of it all. As children grow, they learn through play whether it be gaining the ability through social interactions to tell the difference between insects and spiders or through the classroom seeing what others students display. During these times the child is taking in their experiences and applying it to a more personal meaning. As the child begins to understand their experience that is where the knowledge production comes into place. It allows the child to make sense of the experience and understand how it is meaningful toward them. In the example, the book gave us Devon used the word bug when referring to the spider he showed Gino. Gino quickly corrected him and told Devon the difference between a spider and an insect. This experience was created through social interaction. It allowed Devon to think deeper to understand the material deeper. In the future, Devon will relate back to his experience he had with Gino when he refers to spiders and insects. Social interaction is beneficial, but it can also be harmful to knowledge production.
