The bell rang and everyone filed out the door as fast as they could. Lamar was the last one in the room, he was in no rush. He grabbed his backpack and trudged out the door after the others. Lamar was one of the many juniors in Princetown High School. He walked to his locker and opened it. He shoved his books into the locker and removed his basketball. He bounced it twice quickly, then picked it up and began to walk towards the exit. He left the building and headed towards the courts. There was a complex with two outdoor basketball courts just a mile from the school, and Lamar spent just about all of his time there. They split up the teams, Lamar and Tom were on the same team. They had a tall guy who kept tossing his head to the side in an attempt to get his long blonde hair out of his face. The other guy on there team was a shorter guy, with a boxy figure and spiked black hair who Lamar had seen in a few of his classes but never talked to before. The other team had an even four players, and got the ball first. They played until Lamar's team won, twenty one to fourteen. They parted ways as they left the court, and once again Lamar was the last person left. Tom yelled “See you tomorrow dude” as he walked away. Lamar gathered his stuff and began to walk home. He lived rather close to the court. He opened the door to his house and entered. He dropped his bag and his basketball right in the hallway. He opened the refrigerator and grabbed a blue gatorade. He shut the door then opened a cabinet door. He removed a protein bar, then pushed that door closed as well. Goatee spoke up for the first time. His gravely voice coughed out “ Forget it, he’s not worth it.” Those words made Lamar freeze. He couldn’t move as he felt his consciousness evaporate while he drowned in memory. He found himself in the same room they were in now, twelve years ago. His mother was crying. He particularly remembered that he could not, for the life of him, figure out why she couldn’t stop crying. His brother was up in his room. Lamar sat on the stairs watching as his parents yelled at each other. He couldn’t make out any of the dialogue. His father made a move for the door. he opened it, and right before he walked outside, Lamar heard his mother say “Wait!” His father looked back. His mother locked eyes with Lamar, then looked back at his father. She pointed at Lamar and asked his father angrily “You can’t even stay for him?” His father locked eyes with him and stared at him for a full ten seconds. Finally, without removing his eyes from Lamar’s, he replied “He’s not worth it.” He closed the door. Lamar hadn't seen his father since that day. “I’ll do it.” Lamar confidently

Exceedingly few people had been audacious enough to walk the desolate streets of the Bronx, especially not at twilight. Not too far away, a family was in their small apartment. The young boy, Reginald, was huddled in bed listening to the angry footsteps and jaded voices that reverberated through their tiny home, scarring the wooden frame on which he lay. Reginald strained to hear his mother’s barely audible whisper, but could clearly discern the vicious, stinging sound of his father’s hand striking his mother, again, as he had so many times before.…

The last of my high school career was spent at Plant City high school, in the small town of Plant City, Florida. Nothing much has happened in the small Floridain town except the annual strawberry festival. The only activities one can do involves driving to Lakeland or Brandon. The school in the area was rather dirty compared to other schools in the district, often smelling of fried rice along with the marijuana and robotussin the students sold among each other. The dark bland hallways robbed of color and spirit usually filled with mexican immagrant students and (of the lack of a better word) white trash trying to co exist.…
