As Han tells her that he had seen their son, a look of concern comes over her face. Even with his betrayal, Leia says of her son to Han, “you think I want to forget him, I want him back.” She continues to say “we can still save him,” because “there is still light in him, I know it.” She refuses to give up one those she loves, and believes fervently in their redemption. Princess Leia achieves this goal in beautiful fashion. Her compassion leads her to be dedicated to the cause of the Rebellion, and in extension the people who fight for it. Because she has compassion for those around her, she is constantly encouraging and inspiring them to do the things that are necessary to achieve the greatest good. Above all else, her commitment to doing the right thing is what sets Princess Leia apart as a statesman for the galaxy. This commitment is evidence in her dedication, compassion, trustworthiness, and success in succeeding through adversity. There are tons of indispensable qualities of being a leader with a lot of people. People demonstrate these qualities by helping others in harsh conditions and starting a movement that will help change things to become better. People such as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman have both played a role against slavery in society. Harriet Tubman was a strong leader who did not give up to accomplish a goal. In Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad it states “Harriet had found it hard to leave the warmth and friendliness, too.…

George Washington, a prime example of what one regards to be a great leader. Dependable, communicative, and charismatic are all words that surface when asked to describe George Washington. Being an introvert, if I had to be as communicative or charismatic as Mr. Washington, I would be terror-stricken, but that does not mean that I am not an awe-inspiring leader like him. Our first president may have been a heroic leader, however, there are many other remarkable leaders that do not fit within that definition. Rosa Parks, a seamstress that has influenced millions of individuals through her actions alone without being as communicative as Mr. Washington.…

Movies are a great way to learn about leadership. And not many movies can compete with the Princess Bride (Reiner, 1987) when it comes to learning leadership. Let’s take a look at how leadership is demonstrated in each of the characters, based on the work of Komives, Lucas, and McMahon (2013): in Table 8.2: Examples of Common Roles in Groups (Komives et al., 2013, 323-324). These roles are as follows: “Information Seeker, Opinion Seeker, Opinion Giver, Summarizer, Clarifier, Gatekeeper, Encourager, Mediator, and Follower.” (Komives et al., 2013, 323-324; explanations of these roles may also be found there.)…

I feel this is a great topic idea, especially for Star Wars. There are numerous examples within Star Wars that demonstrate how Princess Leia is not just an ordinary princess. For example, one of the scenes I enjoyed is right after Luke rescues Princess Leia from her cell. Instantly after Luke and Han Solo rescue her from her cell, they become pinned down by continuous blaster fire from the Stormtroopers. While the guys are trying to come up with an escape plan, Princess Leia grabs Luke’s blaster and fires at a grate in the wall, creating a means of escape.…
