They were not doing their job so Curdie in order to protect the princess and the king from losing his princess he encouraged them to step on their feet. And they followed his example gaining encouragement from a boy doing the right thing. He earned honor by stepping up even when everyone else was afraid. Generally when an older person or an example for the younger people hesitate or even give up, the kids give up as well seeing that the older more experienced person couldn’t do it how on earth could they do it.
