Prince was more than just an artist, he was an influencer, style icon, and an activist. Prince was noted as controversial and racy, due to his personal style and his style of music. In his life, he won 32 awards, which included 7 grammy’s, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 2004 (Prince Biography). Prince’s legacy will live on through music and style. Prince influence has changed the music industry, by pushing artist to go out of their boundaries. During his reign, his music spewed sex and soul with a mixture of funk. This style was never seen before Prince came into the industry, many artist sample his music in their songs or get inspiration from his previous work. His funky style of music is an inspiration to artist such as D’Angelo, Alicia Keys, TLC, Janet Jackson, etc. Producer Pharrell Williams is said to give credit for his entire career to Prince, taking inspiration from songs like “When doves cry” and “Kiss” (Denney). …show more content…
He eluded sex appeal through his music and fashion. His dark winged eyeliner, ruffled top, and bell bottoms represented who he was and force against conforming to what society wanted. Fashion companies, such as Gucci and Tom Ford, began combining women and men fashion shows, which was pioneered by Prince’s “grey area”(Elan). His androgynous style not only influenced fashion, he influenced others to be proud with their sexuality. Artist, Frank Ocean, states, “He was a straight black man who played his first televised set in bikini bottoms and knee high heeled boots, epic, he made me feel more comfortable with how I identify sexually simply by his display of freedom from and irreverence for obviously archaic ideas like gender conformity etc”(Denney).
