The book opens with Lady Lamorna ordering a stunning dress, a bat takes her order, then flies away. Lady Lamorna then turns to her treasure chest and SCREAMS. She is broke, so in order to pay for her dress, she concocts an evil plan. In the words of her troll slave Gubble: "Prince. Zap! Frog"(5). This idea, combined with blackmail, will surely deliver.

The main character, Gracie Gillypot, lives with her malevolent stepfather Mange Undershaft, and his wicked daughter Foyce. Gracie is rescued from her stepfamily by a talking bat named Marlon. Marlon takes her to the Ancient Crones, who are three very old ladies who care for the web of power. They give her tea and cake as they tell her the sinister events that are unfolding. They explain to her that Lady Lamorna has already put her Prince-to-Frog plan into action, and has unexpectedly joined forces with Foyce. The Crones will need Gracie's help to

He is told to go the celebration to see if Lady Lamorna is up to anything.
Marcus travels to the gathering and meets Marlon. Marlon instructs him to watch Foyce, and he witnesses her transforming all the princes and princesses into frogs. Marlon then cryptically instructs him to proceed to the town of Fracture, then promptly darts off. Before Marcus can be on his way, he happens upon Gubble, Lady Lamorna's troll servant. Gubble however, is at the moment incapacitated (his head is on backward). Gubble explains to Marcus that he is done with evilness, and wants to help. They are then on their way. As these events commence Gracie is instructed to travel to Fracture to retrieve the frogs, then she will bring them back to the Crones so they can be turned back. It is essential that Foyce follows her, so she can be contained by the Crones. Gracie will also be assisted by Prince Marcus, whose brother is among the royal
