For example, Prince Prospero attempted to camouflage himself in the seven single colored rooms as he tried to hide away from death. Prince Prospero would move into a different room every time the ebony clock rang each and every hour. While Prospero’s guests were unaware of what was going on, Prince Prospero was in hiding without anyone knowing. The last room is the black room with red windows and inside lies the ebony clock. When the clock rings each hour, its sound is so loud and distracting that everyone stops talking and the orchestra stops playing. When the clock is silent, the rooms are beautiful and strange, and they seem to be filled with dreams, swirling among the revelers. Most guests avoid the final, black and red room because it contains both the clock and an ominous ambience. When midnight struck, a person walked through the door dressed in the most terrifying and ghoulishly costume of the party. His mask looked like the face of a corpse, his garments resembled a funeral shroud, and his face revealed spots of blood suggesting that he was a victim of the Red Death. Prospero was angry that someone with so little humor and cheerfulness dared enter his party. The other guests, however, were so afraid of this mystery, masked man that they failed to prevent him from walking through each colored room. When Prospero finally caught up to the new guest in the black room, he confronted the masked figure and died. When other party-goers enter the room to attack the cloaked man, they find that there is no one beneath the costume only a mask and a cloak.
