It shows that he’s a significant man. In the story He is shown to have cleverness, wisdom, and skill. He is praised for his skill and ability to drive up to twenty mules in a single line to their leaders. He was of such importance to the people on the ranch that his word was always respected. Whatever he said was done without questioning. You can relate this back to the descriptive words the author used previously, “Prince of the Ranch,” because of how respected and honored he was. He was shown honor comparable to how princes are shown honor. The author then goes on to describe Slim’s style as one of having “gravity” and “a quiet so profound that his word was taken on any subject.” Basically, this states that when people took orders from Slim, he didn’t have to yell or raise his voice. One of the main characters, George, finds that Slim is the only one he can really confide in on the ranch. He has a pleasant, warming tone that allows and encourages George to cultivate a friendship with him. This allows George to open up to him later and tell of his past and how it led him to where he was presently. Slim was sympathetic and compassionate. He understood and he appreciated the difficulty that George went through to look out for his friend, Lenny. George has to relentlessly go out of his way to look out for his friend who is always unintentionally getting in trouble. Slim shows his admiration for the two sticking together. He acknowledges that the reason most people travel, is for them. They go from ranch to ranch making money for their own way in the world, often not caring about anyone else.
