Primary, secondary, and tertiary are the three levels of prevention in school nursing. Primary prevention deals with "health promotion activities, teaching healthy lifestyles, and immunizing children for school entry" (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014, p.572). Secondary prevention involves "the screening of children for various illnesses, monitoring their growth and development, and caring for them when they are ill or injured" (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014, p. 572). Tertiary prevention assists in managing chronic health problems in children and providing continuity of care for children with long term health problems. The national Safe Kids Campaign works with the schools to help keep children safe. Buckling up while riding in a car, wearing a helmet when riding a bike, and fire safety are some of the educational classes the school nurse can provide to the students. School nurses even evaluate how safe the equipment is on the school playground. Some of the equipment can really be dangerous and unsafe! I remember some children breaking their arms while jumping out of swings and falling off the monkey bars. Eventually, the monkey bars were off limits and anyone jumping out of a swing would be penalized to help prevent any future injuries. Stanhope and Lancaster state that "teaching teenagers about the dangers of all drugs is the responsibility of the school nurse" (p. 573). Our children and adolescents must be educated on the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. I still remember the campaign against drugs, Just Say No, when I was in school.
