Primary Field Of Study

When I was little I did not want to be the president or a princess like most kids. I wanted to be a scientist. Researching and finding out why things work the way they do excited me. As I grew older my passion for research never subsided, but becoming exposed to different cultures and languages when I moved to America altered my academic aspirations. This mixture of people fascinated me and eventually led me to want to research how culturally different people interact and how a country like the United States can thrive on diversity. My primary field of study, Sociology/Anthropology, allows me to research the interaction of people, the historical precedents of situations and the social norms pertaining to specific cultures. I am also enchanted

The process of taking bits of information and synthesizing them into an integrated whole captivates me. In college I explored the connectedness between subjects in my studies of psychology, biology, and chemistry. I found it fascinating that all of these topics were interconnected and that one could directly affect another. For example, a genetic mutation in the genome can lead to an underdeveloped organ, which may result in lower hormone production and lead to a psychological disorder. Likewise, environmental factors can influence gene expression, leading to the up- or down-regulation of hormones which in turn affect mood and psychopathology.…

Since an early age, I have always wanted to be involved with health sciences, and I have work as hard as I can to accomplish this dream. I was born into a Hispanic family, and raised in way that puts values ahead of money or economic status. I did not enjoy the luxuries that many of my friends had, but I was taught very strong principles. My father always taught me to work hard no matter what, weather it was for a job, school or a hobby. He always told me that I will encounter many rocks in my path, but that it would be up to me to stay behind that rock and let the rock defeat me, or I could just find a way to continue on my path until the next rock.…

Hello, I am Trevor Alexander. If you would ask my friends to summarize me they would say I am a medium height boy that is loving, always in the outdoors, someone that can sell you on a product that you are pretty sure you do not need, that also loves animals, and has a strong work ethic. When I was born my parents named me Trevor. At the time Trevor was not a common name. Since I am such an inspirational person, many others also decided to name their son Trevor.…

Initially, I came into my undergraduate studies at St. Ambrose University looking to become an Occupational Therapist, but that goal changed once I began my undergraduate coursework. Towards the end of a semester of research methods, I became fascinated with statistics and the process of research. In biopsychology classes, I learned how wonderful and sometimes cruel the human mind could be. Occupational Therapy suddenly seemed less interesting and I began to look more seriously at pursuing a different path, more in line with the amazing things I was learning about psychology, research, and the brain.…

Honors committee, As long as I can remember I have sought challenges in academics. Until only recently I didn't know why I pushed myself as hard as I have in school, but now I understand it is because I truly love learning. For me, discovering something new or unknown, teaching myself a new skill, or learning more about the world around me is one of the most gratifying things in my life. This is part of why I think I should be admitted into the honors program here at the University of Iowa. As a young child I was insatiably curious, asking my mother questions ad nausea, never satisfied with simple answers.…

Something outside of my intended focus of being a civil engineer is civil rights and how it ties into our communities. I want to explore ways to make a better social environment and make people of color and others be confident and secure of who they are. I want to reach out and hear the stories that are conducted throughout the communities we live in and get a better understanding on how to improve it. I believe it is important for me, being a person of color, and others to make an attempt to not just have equality but have equity. Especially in the time we live in now.…

I believe the world is fueled by curiosity. Where would we be if Christopher Columbus had not been curious enough to sail across the Atlantic? We would probably be a hundred years late on the original timeline that was set. Where would the world be if people were not open minded? Theories would have not been created, theories shaped our education.…

Describe your educational and career goals and explain what or who has inspired or helped shape these goals. During my high school years, I recall working in the fields during vacation breaks with my mother harvesting tomatoes, picking up cherries, and pruning grape vines. Fascinating as it sounds, I was always intrigued to understand why fruits and vegetables spoil or often cause food poising in humans. Although, when I questioned my mother why these fruits spoil, she responded it was due to "little bugs," which was not a sufficient response.…
