Primary Cultural Barriers

Improved Essays
Families are known as the primary cultural barriers in our society. For this assignment we had to interview the eldest member in my family. I interviewed my uncle because he was the perfect match for this assignment. My uncle had a lot to say when I was interviewing him on race. I realize when you sit down and have conversation and listen to older people you would learn a lot from them. Some things you could learn are things about your family history and things that happen in the world that you did not experience but they did as they were growing up.
I asked my uncle did he remember the first time he became aware of race. He told me about how his parents talked to him about other races when he was a young boy. My uncle said that his parents introduce him to different races because he was starting school for the first time and he would see that there are people that do not have the same skin color as him but we are all still human and should be treated the same. He said that he lived in a neighborhood that only had people living there. My uncle told me

I was told to accept all race no matter the circumstance and be mindful that some are still living in the old days. When I say that I am talking about racism. My family and I are far from racist, but I cannot say that for others. I was told that racism still exist. No matter what happened in the past, present, or future I should still treat others the way I would want to be treated and accept them for who they are. Learning about race and racism has some impact on my life today because I love all people of different race and ethnic groups no matter what. I learned that racism does not get you far in life but it could possibly get you put in jail because of the hate you have for others. I love and accept every race because I have to work with them, take the same classes as them, and also talk with them. Those things would be hard to do if you are a

Some may think that in order to treat different people equally, we must give them all the same treatment. In a quote by Harry Blackmun, former US Supreme Court Justice, he said, “In order to treat some persons equally, we must treat them differently.” What did Blackmun mean by this? I believe that Blackmun was trying to say that different people need to be treated differently. Wouldn’t you treat a baby different from an adult?…

With Avery County historically always been a very petite county and approximately never exceeding a population of 17,834, the views and opinions of slavery are corresponding within most residents of the county. To fully understand what most residents think of slavery, the history of slavery in Avery County must be discussed. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz debuts a character named Oscar who struggles between exhibiting two identities; that of a Dominican, and that of a nerd.” In Dominican culture, being a true dominican man requires an alpha mentality through life, especially in the realm of public appearance and within the world of picking up women. On the other hand, a nerd is labeled as someone who exhibits none of those qualities and is generally more interested in non-social hobbies such as reading comic books, or playing video games on a constant basis. Oscar’s attempt to blend two different cultures into one in order to establish his own unique identity made me reminisce on the early days in my life, in which I too, also struggled between exhibiting two different identities. Unlike Oscar, both of my identity issues stick within the realm of race and heritage.…

I’ve usually learned in hard way because frankly, I love to challenge myself to expand my personal capacity. Although I had already talked to one of my classmates about having interview with her as a Caucasian woman, I decided to do it with my cousin’s friend, Jacob, who I met in my place for the first time during Thanksgiving holidays. Interviewing Jacob about his interactions with other cultures has made me realize that I have a lot to learn about the meaning of the privilege and holding it. Jacob was a 24-year-old Caucasian, who lived in Missouri his entire life. Though he was visiting California for the second time in his life, he was in a Persian house for the first time.…

Anthropologist Francio Guadeloupe said, “An effective counter- approach to racism was to focus on the creation of inclusive cultural celebration.” Moreover, you should not act a way or think of another race negatively before you know it. You should study it to better understand behaviors and different customs of which you are not used to. No one deserves to be judged just because they look a certain way, dress, speak, or even behave differently than what you are used to. Every person has a story, don’t judge people before you truly know them.…

I must admit that this was one of the hardest assignments that I have to do. First reason been that I did not know where to start from or what to write about and the second been that how I was going to do this without coming across as weird and just sitting and observing seemed boring. Now, after the fact, it was interesting to see what I found. In doing this assignment, I have picked up on and known the things that I always witnessed, but I never really put it into a context.…

Race has also affected my life in many ways and continues to affect it in my everyday life. I identify as being white since that is the color of my skin. Race is not something that someone can choose or change because it is how they are born.
