Primary Care Practicum Reflection

Decent Essays
I went to my primary care practicum site twice this week. I had a site visit this week. It is always stressful when you have your professor watching you while you are interacting and providing care to the patient. The reasons for the visits are physical exam, well child visit, follow up on dysfunctional uterine bleeding, knee pain, lab follow up, chronic disease management, muscle spasm, pap, vaccination and titer check for immigration, hospital follow up, cough, hypothyroidism, dysuria and erectile dysfunction. I can tell I am feeling more confident about collecting data, assessing, diagnosing, and creating plans. On Monday there were several no show. Thus, I managed to see 7 patients individually. However, on Friday, I managed to see 8 patient

According to the official National Honor Society website, NHS serves to “not only recognize students for their accomplishments, but challenge them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.” The paragraph goes on to describe how the students in NHS ideally strive to achieve “excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.” As an individual hoping to become a member of the society, I interpret this to mean that when one enters NHS, they are not granted the freedom to then be lazy with their grades or lax with their leadership simply because they were deemed suitable for the society at one point. Rather, as a member of the National Honor Society, one becomes a leader on campus and a model of character, while continuing to offer constructivity and inspiration to their community and peers.…

From midterm to current my CI allowed me to handle more of her caseload, observe online documentation, and weekly progress reports on her patients. She encouraged questions, and thoroughly explained why certain treatments and activities were better than others. She allowed for open communication of patient interventions, which made me feel comfortable enough to take on more of her case load and contributed to my visual, and hands on style of learning. From my initial visit to current my CI has ensured my environment promotes growth at my clinical site.…

As a result if is vitally important that social workers reflect and engage in reflection and identify themes is part of improving and growing as a practitioner. Katy’s support worker and representative from her residential home commented that on how Katy had been settling in since her move from her foster carer’s. The support worker said that there had obviously been a ‘honeymoon period’ but this had not lasted long. The first behavioural incident happened the first Monday following the Friday that Katy was placed in the home, when Katy refused to get into a cab to go to school; one of Katy’s residential workers had to take Katy to school because she would not have gone to school if she had to…

The third week has allowed me to see my progression from when I started to now, it has allowed me to learn from previous experience in my work by reflecting every week knowing the amount of depth to include and showing an understanding in my blogs. This can help within a health and social care setting as you cannot dwell on mistakes, you have to simply pick yourself up and learn from the mistake to ensure you make the right decision the next time to fulfil all of the service user’s needs. We started to look at reflection to make us feel more comfortable in what we were doing. We then went onto learning about theories which helped develop further information because it explained through different opinions. Kolb (1984) states that learning involves…

Freshman year I started volunteering at Suncoast hospice; mainly because of the fact that I needed to build up my pre-med resume with healthcare experience but also because it was the only local health care related volunteer activity and transportation was an issue. Little did I know that taking on a challenge that would have such an impacting effect on my character and how I interpret the world. Through various activities ranging from baking cookies, making hand sewn comfort bears, to delivering groceries, and folding over 500 “thinking about you cards”; I have come to the realization that the ripple effect does not have any limitations, no matter how big or small one’s actions. Completing over 100 hours with hospice is an accomplishment…

This week’s bible passage made me reflect on my clinical rotation at the clinic while shadowing a nurse who was doing an anatomical procedure to an offender who accidentally fell and injured his head. Anatomical is the procedure that any nurse will do before they will assign any offender to segregated or isolated locked rooms or to any offender who needs to be assessed after an event that resulted in an injury. There was a bruising and a “bump” on the back side of the offenders head due to his bad fall. The swollen “bump” measured 3.4 cm. in width by 4cm in length.…

Reflection is an opportunity to learn from our mistakes, improve our practice and knowledge, and to also recognise the positives from an experience. If we don’t use reflection, we will never understand reasons why we do certain things or never be able to improve on previous experiences for the future. Reflection is essential in a care setting as situations are always arising, and we need to make sure we work to the best of our ability. This essay will be discussing the importance of reflection within personal and professional development and also the role of reflection in the provision of quality care within a care setting. This particular essay will involve the values and principles of the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) and also a thoroughly…

Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation. My clinical rotation as a student nurse did not only imply observing the providers, but also meant active participation on my part. Being engaged, enabled me to put into practice what I have learned in theory. The first day of my rotation, the nurse permitted me to augment the Pitocin dose by two units after 20 minutes. I thought that was exciting because I learned about the medication in the class and participated in administering it.…

The interview flowed perfectly throughout the time frame and in my opinion I was able to develop a rapport and trust with Client A. Overall my skills throughout the interview displayed professionalism, and a friendly non- judgemental approach.
The interview commenced with an initiation which included greeting the client, gaining informed consent and an overview of how the session would run. In the future I must remember to enquire about the clients past history of visiting a nutritionist and ensure my limitations are clear.…
