What is behind the label of Primark?
Ethics
People, companies, banks and governments do need to take daily ethical decisions, but what are ethics? Ethics are a set of beliefs about what is wrong or wright. For example, when people buy clothes they question themselves whether should buy pricey but fair made clothes or cheap clothes.
Those decisions are shifted to the customer. However such ethical decisions should be placed at the begin of the supply chain of brands.

Primark’s Ethics
In this case, a few of Primark ethics will be tested, whether it is implemented or not.
Primark’s code of conduct contains 12 ethics, and the ethics which Primark does not implement will be examined .

On 24 April 2013 Rana Plaza collapsed, which resulted in more than 1000 deaths, and more than 2000 injured people. Rana Plaza was a building, which contained mainly garment factories that supplied clothes to several brands, one of those brands was Primark. The collapse of Rana Plaza was due to several reasons such as exceeding the total floor limit, industrial use instead of commercial use. Brief, Rana Plaza was not built safe enough for workers, and that is contradicting Primark’s code of conduct ethic number three. Following the Rana Plaza tragedy, the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh was set up. The Accord is an agreement between over 200 apparel brands and retailers, as well as international and local trade unions working towards sustainable improvements to working conditions in the Bangladesh garment industry. In 2011, Primark started a partnership with Solidaridad, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands, and 8 other brands as part of the Partnership for Cleaner Textile(PACT) to support textile wet processing factories in Bangladesh in implementing sustainable and resource efficient practices. The Cleaner Production programmes provide training to mills and vertical suppliers on how to make improvements to their washing, dyeing and printing operations. The training helps them to reduce the water, chemicals and energy they use and ensure that wastewater is treated properly.

In 2013 Primark partnered with Cottonconnet and the Self-Employed Women’s Association to create the ‘Primark Sustainable Cotton Programme’. The program is established to introduce a more sustainable farming method, which reduces the use of water, fertilize, pesticides, and improve cotton yields and increase the farmer’s income. A three year pilot in Gujurat was established in India,, in year two of the program there was a 53,5 procent reduction in pesticide use, 13,5 percent reduction in fertilizer usage and 27,9 percent decrease in water
