Something that helps determine what moral standing a person should take in a situation is a prima facie duty. A prima facie is what a person feels or sees at the very first glance. Some examples of prima face duties are to tell the truth, don’t kill people, and help other people in need. These all seem like things that are obvious, but they shouldn’t always be true if there is another conflict at cost. Because people do not agree that a prima facie is making the most for the majority of people affected, it is best to look at a conflict from the utilitarian and deontological perspective. In an experiment, scientists put rats in a cage with a bottle of pure water and a bottle of water traced with cocaine. Most of the rats chose to drink out of the bottle with cocaine in it until they died from getting addicted to it. After getting these results, they decided to run the experiment differently and put toys and lots of friends for the rats to play with in the cage. The rats that took advantage of the toys and friends did not drink the water with cocaine in it. However, the rats that didn’t play with anything drank themselves to death with the cocaine water. The happy rats thrived while the lonely rats got addicted to the cocaine. During the Vietnam War, many soldiers became addicted to heroin. Surprisingly, when the war ended and they went back home, the majority of the soldiers had stopped doing heroin without any type of treatment. The researcher claims that the addiction is the cage a person is in, not the drug they are taking.
