Christianity is commonly known for its lists of “laws” referred to as the Ten Commandments. Amongst this “laws” is another list that discusses attitudes and behaviors that Christians should avoid, called the Capital Vices or better known as the Seven Deadly Sins. It begins by listing of pride as its first deadly sin and often viewed as the most notorious one among Christians due to the idea that pride is the act of putting yourself above god. In the short story Revelation, devote Catholic author Flannery O’Connor takes a look at pride. O’Connor then chooses to take it a step further by discussing the elephant in the church, pride in one’s own Christianity also referred to as the attitude of hubris. Turpin is offered through Mary Grace. Despite being first introduced as the girl sitting next to her, the reader soon learns how important she is to the story. This is done through the introduction of her name Mary Grace. Examining the name finds that Mary was the name of the Christian’s Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and he brought grace to all children of god, this leading to the interpretation of Mary Grace being either saving grace or bringing of grace. In the story Mary Grace is found bringing grace to Mrs. Turpin by tossing a book at her and uttering, “Go back to hell where you came from, you old wart hog” (500). In this phrase alone it calls for Turpin to examine her behavior as well as calling for her hubris sin to leave sharing aspects of the story of Jesus casting out demons into the body of pigs. Turpin who later own accepts it. Mrs. Turpin’s greatest revelation is her understanding of her own sin pride in her own faith also known as the hubris. This revelation allows for Mrs. Turpin to truly understand Christianity as well as what she should really be grateful for. But most importantly this short story discusses how the elephant in the church, the idea of needing to ask grace from God not because of their actions alone but as well as attitudes. Therefore reaffirming the idea that pride is not only the first deadly sin numerically but spiritually as well due to the notion of it putting your-self above
