Pride In The Odyssey

Imagine knowing everything about the earth, including why there are natural phenomenon. Now imagine knowing nothing, not a single concept about the earth. In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, a father has to encounter several natural phenomenon to get back to his family. This is extremely difficult for Odysseus to accomplish, being his greatest weakness is pride. Odysseus has only met his son once, in addition, he hasn’t seen him for about twenty years. He hasn’t been there to witness his child grow up, as a result, he is willing to accomplish whatever it takes to get back home. Odysseus must be able to overcome his pride, have patience, along with being careful in the sea. Pride is a good thing and a bad thing. Odysseus’s greatest obstacle …show more content…
Certain types of people are patient while others are not. Odysseus is impatient, but eager to return to his wife. Once his men betrayed him and opened the bag of air, to get home, Odysseus was immensely furious. “Southwestern California is slowly -- very slowly -- sliding past the rest of the state toward Alaska”(Yan and Berlinger 3). Southwestern California can possibly move all the way to Alaska. Odysseus was able to utilize a bag of air to get home. Odysseus didn’t move extremely fast because he was only letting out the tiniest bit of air at a time. Southwestern California isn’t going to move near Alaska in a day, this will take place over a long period of time. The bag of air Odysseus possessed became useless after his men opened it, as a result, they ended up back on Aeolus’s island. Odysseus was away from his wife and son for about twenty years. All Odysseus wanted was to be home with his family. He wanted to take the fastest way home, but it always ended up backfiring.”The infamous San Andreas Fault is due for its epic every-150-years rumble”(Yan and Berlinger 1). We are impatient about waiting for a prediction telling us when the next major earthquake will hit. We wonder when the next earthquake will occur, it’s strength, and where the epicenter will be located. Having to wonder is extremely bothering. Similarly to us, Odysseus, who is impatient to be with his family is constantly wondering when he will be home. He wonders if his wife stepped down, wonders if she got married and wonders about the unknown, , Clearly Odysseus is impatient about getting home, just as we are impatient about having knowledge when the next earthquake will

Odysseus’ long journey back home is grueling and harrowing and this fact is only intensified by what his family must endure back home in Ithaka. Though Odysseus may be preoccupied with difficult challenges as he makes his way back home, it is Odysseus’ nearly constant longing for home that enables him to so strongly persevere as he does in The Odyssey. Odysseus relies on his crew in part to keep him on task, and they often remind him to keep going on his path, though it may be troublesome and difficult at times.…
