Beowulf was supposed to be a wise and knowledgeable warrior who could successfully lead his people to safety and victory. Instead he chose to…
Beowulf affirms that it takes humility to defeat evil before every battle he goes into. At first it may seem like he is boasting, but what he is doing is the total opposite of boasting. Beowulf would make a “boast” for motivation during his battles. He knew that if he didn’t live up to his boast ding the battle, then his reputation would be ruined. He also gave glory to God and said that his victories wouldn’t be possible without the Lord by his side.…
The four of the main characters from these two stories share some characteristics. The theme of “Beowulf primarily deals with the sense of adventure, and deals with an epic story. The theme of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” deals with medieval romance and with the code of chivalry. Two characters in the two stories are arrogant, and the other two characters experience change over time in their roles. One of the characteristics that Beowulf and the Green Knight share is arrogance.…
Epic poetry thrives as one of the oldest form of narrative and storytelling. Epic poetry has specific rules on convention’s, that is must adhere to. The poem follows all the three major rules, as the actions consist of deeds of great valor on superhuman courage, such as the Battle vs. Grendel. Writing style is lofty and elevated, and beginning in the middle of the story. Beowulf went to fight but didn’t use a weapon because Grendel didn’t have one.…
The way that Beowulf gained the proper pride was “his acceptance of such a possibility as being under the control of God shows that he is willing to sacrifice himself for the good of a people under a king that is not even his own” (Pride & Beowulf). Since Beowulf was claimed to have the proper pride instead of corrupting evil pride like Macbeth previewed, he proved to people that not all power dominant prides are classified as evil. The author of Beowulf even said “Beowulf has communicated that while improper pride may always be more dominant, and certainly easier to obtain, there is a place and function for proper pride” (Pride & Beowulf) Having the proper pride sets an example for all future pagan culture authors who want to use pride in stories by showing that sometimes, pride can lead an epic character into becoming a classical heroic picture such as Beowulf.…
Sicheng Xie (Marina) Mr. Arnold English 4/D Sep. 15, 2015 Glory of the Warriors in Beowulf It is surprising to think about fifteen monarchs of the British Isles was killed in battle during the year of 877 to 1513. Kings of the kingdoms are definitely not like in many people’s imagination, live as the highest power of the kingdom and enjoy their own lives. Great kings sacrifice themselves for the kingdoms and tribes, just like Beowulf. The poem Beowulf showed the readers how a great king gained glory for his tribe and people, beloved and memorized by them.…
His enemy is a dragon which attacks Beowulf’s kingdom because a thief has stolen its treasure (2217-20). Thus the dragon represents greed and pride. By this time, Beowulf is old and weaker than he was before. Nevertheless, he decided to face the dragon on his own, which shows his great pride. Beowulf’s pride is a deadly character flaw, as it makes him reckless and arrogant.…
We see that Beowulf fights for the honor of his lord, his Gods, and his people throughout the story. Both heroes believe that their honorable deeds will make them immortal through the actions of their Gods, but the major difference between them is how they achieve their honorable…
Choose, dear Beowulf, the better part, eternal reward. Do not give way to pride. For a brief while your your strength is in bloom but it fades quickly; and soon there will follow illness or the sword to lay you low, or a sudden fire or surge of water or a jabbing blade or javelin from the air or repellent age, your piercing eye will dim and darken; and death will arrive, dear warrior, to sweep you away” (Heaney, 2000). I believe that this part in the book is a key moment to the book because king Hrothgar can tell that Beowulf is very a prideful person so he decided to give him some advice on how a good king/warrior should be. Hrothgar notices that beowulf would eventually become king because of all the things that he has done and the things that are left for him to do, king Hrothgar lets beowulf know that he should not be a king/warrior that was full of pride and I think this is important because he is telling him that in order for him (beowulf) to be a ruler he has to be different type of king/warrior and not be like everyone out there, he should be a smart king/warrior making good decisions because if he doesn't, he might die and just because he was so prideful and not doing things the way he was supposed to do them he ends up giving his life away and ends up doing everything wrong and…
Thieves cause more harm than they realize, and Beowulf shows the real traits possessed by him. Chances to prove yourself happen few and far between. The epic poem Beowulf written and produced by an unknown author, but gets many life lesson points across. Actions taken by the thief cause many people to die in the dragon's rage. Pride of Beowulf causes him to go after Grendel’s mother, but Beowulf shows great leadership when going to fight the dragon.…
The Old English poem Beowulf offers a number of contrasts in telling the story of the hero Beowulf and his fight to save a community not his own from the monster Grendel. One of the contrasts is between youth and old age, and this contrast is not presented in a very explicit fashion but is inherent in the role of the young man, Beowulf, who is expected to achieve a certain heroic stature before he becomes older, like the leader of the Danes, a man much older now but one who would have been more like the youthful and vigorous Beowulf when he was in his prime. Now, he needs the help of the younger man to protect his kingdom and so to maintain his household. Through his actions, Beowulf is able to create his own legend and secure his own riches…
Throughout our classroom discussion, we discussed the results of Beowulf’s pride. Beowulf’s pride and confidence in the poem was the result of discussion in class. The main debate was if Beowulf’s actions were selfish or selfless. Another question raised was if Beowulf was more of a warrior or peacemaker. Along with this question, people began to wonder if Beowulf was a role model or a lesson learned.…
Beowulf shows courageous in numerous times in the story, but one that sticks out is when he is getting ready to fight Grendel’s mom who is bigger and I imagine a lot scarier! “He leaped into the lake, would not wait for anyone’s answer. ”(Beowulf) This quote shows that Beowulf was ready when he said he was ready and didn’t wait on anyone to give him the okay, I find this action courageous, because Beowulf showed no sign of hesitation, or fright.…
Beowulf’s attitude changed throughout his life just like every person’s attitude changes on a day to day basis. Beowulf was cocky, but being cocky was all that Beowulf had ever known. I say that because he was the strongest man in the world, he earned that title and he wore the title with pride, but the way that his attitude towards most things were, tore him down and made his life more challenging. Beowulf was an epic hero and because of his conceited attitude he was able to find confidence in himself to overcome supernatural events that no ordinary human could overcome. On the other hand, Beowulf shows us a side of him that all he wanted was fame and fortune, which is not a heroic trait.…
