Pride Consumes Us All
Pride is seen and shown in many different ways. It pushes the way people act, think, and react. Pride shows different ways of how people act when they are exposed to different situations, which triggers their prideful instinct. Many leaders in history reveal this when they are presented with a tough situation and make decisions off of their pride alone instead of rational decisions. This alike is seen in The Crucible which it is seen many times throughout the play through Reverend Parris, Judge Danforth, John Proctor, & Abigail Williams.

To begin, one of the first characters in the story to show his pride was Reverend Parris. Reverend Parris is the priest in the town’s church and has the highest power. Uncle to abby and father to betty. He is a very important part to the village and helps the village operate. He is prideful because he has a lot of power in the village and wouldn’t want to be proven wrong or look foolish in the village just because Abigail williams said all the false statements and killed so many innocent villagers. He controls everything in the village and essentially is the mayor of the village. Proof of reverend Parris’ pride is when he is in the church is listening to John Proctor.

Judge Danforth is a judge that came to the village to be in charge of the witch trials. It was all started because Reverend Parris caught the group of young girls dancing in the woods. He listens to multiple people telling him that witchcraft isn’t in the village, but still continues to believe it. He is the deciding factor that decides who gets sentenced to hanging. He also fell victim to Abigail Williams lies and believed her. When he sees the paper with the 91 names and says that he wants them all arrested for not believing in the witchcraft. When he said he was going do this it caused a panic because it was going to taking 91 innocent lives to

    After hearing that there was talk of witchcraft happening in his home after catching Abigail and the other girls dancing in the forest, he repeatedly rambles to Abigail about the possibility of the rumor ruining his reputation saying, “just now when some good respect is rising for me in the parish, you compromise my very character… my enemies will bring it out… and they will ruin me with it” (10-11).
