Joseph B. Wirtglin, a famous American businessman, once said that, “Pride and vanity, the opposites of humility, can destroy our spiritual health as surely as a debilitating disease can destroy our physical health (Bassett, Doug 170).” A negative/unhealthy emotions/thoughts are as destructible as diseases that destroy people 's mental health and physical health. For men, it 's usually pride and vanity that affect them.
In the book, Of Mice and Men, Curley, the anti-protagonist suffers from a mental disorder called napoleon complex, “Well . . . . tell you what. Curley’s like alot of little guys. He hates big guys. He’s alla time picking scraps with big guys. Kind of like he’s mad at ‘em because he ain’t a big guy. You seen little guys like that ain’t you? Always scrappy (Steinbeck 26)?” Curley’s thoughts and actions are directed by the conflict between pride and inferiority of his physical appearance. Thus he hates/jealous at the same time to the people with bigger body size, because their body stature is something he wants but never can have. She was bullied in school due to her almond-shaped eyes/different eye shape from others when she was young. One day, a girl shouted to her that her leg looked fat. Soon after that, she developed a mental condition where she decided to lose some weight, “‘I was so upset when I got home and looked at myself in the mirror. All I saw was my chubby legs and I soon decided I would have to lose weight.’” She continuously lost control of her appetite and attempt to diet; because the unsatisfied physical look made her want to lose some fat but her desire of food contradicted with her wish of being skinner.
