Have you ever been betrayed? How did you deal with it? Did you yell at them? or forgive them immediately?Betrayal is hard to overcome. Throughout the novels we have read including As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen, they have portrayed betrayal and all of the characters have reacted differently. In As I Lay Dying Addie betrays Anse and Anse betrays Addie. In Pride and Prejudice Darcy betrays Bingley and Bingley forgives him. In A Doll House Nora Helmer betrays her husband Torvald and she leaves him. In As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner Addie betrays Anse, but Anse also betrays Addie. Addie betrays Anse by having another man’s baby. While Addie takes this to the grave with her, on some level Anse knew about it. Addie also thinks she owes Anse something because she had another man’s baby. This is why she had Dewey Dell and Vardaman because she felt she owed Anse something(176). Anse also betrayed Addie when he married a new women almost immediately after burying Addie. This shows that he didn’t love Addie and only kept her around to have kids and feed the family. In As I Lay Dying betrayal is like an eye for an eye because Addie betrays Anse and Anse betrays Addie. In Pride and Prejudice it is about loving each other and forgiving one another once those wrongs have been righted. In A Doll House it is about how betrayal brings out who you really fell in love with and sometimes it teaches you that you need to leave to be happy.
