In Austen's reality these women have very few chances to bolster themselves within the public eye besides an occupation as a Governess or by wedding into riches and notoriety. Females, in this era, had little opportunity for employment, to become a governess was believed to be degrading, and in an instance in which there are no brothers or heirs to the estate, as in the case of the Bennett family, the family then has to comprise its fortune, in this case to a distant cousin, this being Mr Collins. Ladies in this manner endure on numerous trusts because of their femininity, in the stifling society of conduct and class Austen is able to reaffirm that inevitably marriage becomes a requirement for survival. Despite this, Elizabeth remains an independent minded audacious woman who discards Mr Collins’ proposition and initially Mr Darcy's proposal, as she does not believe in marrying simply for status or wealth.
