Relationships, and love in general can be very complicated and difficult. There are often many trials and obstacles to overcome, whether it be pride, other people’s opinions, or even family members, believe it or not. Many people base their feelings for others upon things the people around them have said, and have led them to believe. This is a world where people rarely decide things for themselves. It is found that many people marry for money, and/or a higher social ranking, instead of for love. Therefore, people expect nothing more or less, but what they have yet to discover is that this is not the case for everyone. Elizabeth Bennet, however, did not care what others thought. She did not believe marriage was the absolute only way to be happy, because she was a very independent person. Yet, in the same sense, she wanted to marry for love, not for fortune, and she wanted her relationship to be genuine, unlike the many others around her. Whereas Mr. Darcy did follow the “rules” of being a higher social ranked man, and let pride make his decisions. He thought he was too good for a Bennet sister, and said, “She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me” (Austen 9). Mr. Darcy, a very wealthy landowner, was very commonly known as what we could call today, a rich snob. Miss Mary says, “One cannot wonder that so very fine a young man, with family, fortune, everything in his favour, should think highly of himself. If I may so express it, he has a right to be proud” (Austen 15). Elizabeth noticed Darcy’s cockiness, and quickly grew a disliking towards him. Do not marry someone because of popularity or wealth, it is simply not worth it. Elizabeth and Darcy fought the odds and overcame the obstacles put in their paths. Sure, it would have been easy to give up after their first encounter with each other, but what fun would that have been? Instead, Darcy never gave up, even after already having his proposal be rejected once. He saw something special in Elizabeth, so he waited on her to come along, staying hopeful. Not many people would go back to the person who humiliated them, but as for Mr. Darcy, this was just motivation and made him fall for Elizabeth even more. With that being said, take chances. Do not be afraid of what the outcome may be, because if it is meant to be, it will be. Overcome the odds, and prove people
