Times change. Modern people live in better accommodation; they have another pace of life and different goals if to compare them with people who lived many centuries ago. However, comparative analysis of both Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones’s Diary shows that mothers wanted their daughters to be married despite the fact that they lived in different ages. An obvious and first reason that comes to mind is that mothers can be relaxed and happy when they know that their daughters’ lives are regulated according to their views. As the books show, the mothers had the same ideas about their daughters’ perfect lives – a marriage! Back in the 18-19 centuries, women had almost no rights. These views vary from culture to culture. In eastern countries the situation hasn’t changed. Parents there do not only want their daughters to be married but also choose for them who to marry. Speaking about western countries, there is a growing tendency to concern less about your daughter being married. Women and men have equal rights. They can have the same kinds of jobs. Young women have the right to decide themselves whether to focus on career or family. More and more parents tend to support their daughters in their decisions no matter if they like these decisions or not. At least they respect their choice. Women don’t need a husband to provide for them. They can study, work, or both, and be able to earn their keep or even more. On the one hand, naturally parents want their daughters to get married and have children. On the other hand, you don’t need to be married to give birth to a child.
