Adaptation is a way that an animal’s body adjusts to help it survive in its environment; rapid adaptation usually taking place when there is a sudden change in location or lifestyle for an animal. It’s been scientifically proven that humans, being mammals, also have this occur to them on both small and large scales. Night and Lord of the Flies are both tremendous examples of humans reverting to their primal instincts in order to survive, and both stories fixate on inexperienced children as children cannot properly converse or support themselves, causing them to risk their survival and pressuring them to make extreme decisions. Both of these pieces of literature include examples of physiological changes in humans in order to keep them healthy, emotional contagion amongst the group of characters so as to form a community, and a large focus on the natural fight or flight response when subjected to immense stress. Accordingly, all are adaptations that help the…

In the period from 1860-1900, Darwin developed his theory of natural selection. Natural selection was the idea that a dominant species would overcome all the rest. This sparked many ideas and philosophies, such as a weakening in the church, the rise of Social Darwinism, and a surge of new ideas and thought. The church had always been the lead in the sciences of the day, but when scientists started to challenge the church, their strength began to falter.…

It has been suggested that predator avoidance in primates is an important adaptation for survival. Predation of small bodied primates is easy if those primates are not adapted too detecting and avoiding predators. This paper will determine whether the predator avoidance theory is a sound explanation for the unique traits seen in species like tarsiers and galagos. Small body size, nocturnally and leaping locomotion have been hypothesized as successful predator avoidance strategies. A paper published on a Miocene tarsier will provide evidence of the retained symplesiomorphy of small body size, and how it is advantageous to predator avoidance (Zijlstra et al 2013).…

Often people assume that two species of animals are either predator or prey and that if they are enemies then they can’t help each other, however this is not always true, sometimes individuals from different species of animals can help each other and even bond. An example of such would be a dog that just had puppies might take care of a litter of kittens. Its maternal love would spread even to the kittens and she would become their loving and makeshift mother. The first passage “Animal Roles and Relationships” covers the idea of interspecies relationships and individuals relationships. An example listed in the passage is the relationship between hermit crabs and sea anemones.…
