Reflective Essay: The Prewriting Process Of Henry And Little

Prewriting was the next step in the rhetorical analysis process that prepared me for the structure of the essay that would follow. Outlining had always been something I would skip when it came to writing essays; although after reading about the importance of prewriting and finding that thesis and topic sentences were priority on drafting worksheets, I reconsidered. On the prewriting step of Henry and Little, I started by narrowing down my options for strategies and rhetorical devices to use as supporting evidence (Appendix D). From both Henry and Little’s speeches, I found a strong strategy used by the two was the rhetoric of their tone; therefore I decided through the prewriting process to compare their development of tone through their uses …show more content…
Although my thesis and topic sentences changed a bit when it actually came to writing my essay, writing them before hand created a rough outline that kept me on track with my rhetorical analysis. This strategy I came to learn would help me make sure that I was directing my essay in the right direction of the prompt and keeping my body paragraphs in an organized manner. It was also important for me to be keeping the rhetorical triangle in mind as I wrote my thesis and topic sentences, which was something new that I had not necessarily payed much attention to before learning about the rhetorical triangle. Because of the prewriting step, my essay on Henry and Little was prepared in an organized fashion that ensured my essay to be successful in means of its …show more content…
Prior to learning about the rhetorical analysis, the editing process for me had always been one of many corrections; although, never had I had such great tools to use in this process as I have now. One tool that was provided and found the most use of was the website, Paperrater.com. This website gave me information on my essay that could be changed such as: spelling errors, grammatical errors, vocabulary/word choice, and sections of passive voice. I used this tool before doing anything to my essay to fix as much as I could before digging into looking through my essay myself; this helped me mostly to correct minor errors. My next step in the editing process was writing an introduction. For my essay on Henry and Little, an introduction had been left out through the drafting step due to time; although, as I had learned, an introduction should be left for last, and was something that should be added in the editing portion of the process of time proves a problem. The next step that I took was to go through my essay, line by line, making sure every aspect of my essay was elaborated to its fullest and in the most correct way. During this step, I made sure to keep in mind the phone conference I had previously had (Appendix E) and looked at my essay on Henry and Little in the same manner. I added to explanations that needed to be added to,

In writing, it is very important to recognize different styles and formats that make a piece unique. Ivins, for example, uses rhetoric to explain the current state of Texas and where it stands politically and demographically. Through rhetorical devices, the author is able to paint a clear picture of the state's views, as well as its sense of independence from the U.S. as a whole. The three most effective rhetorical strategies in Molly Ivins’s "Is Texas America?" are word choice, compare/contrast, and tone. In her article, Molly Ivins focuses and breaks down the political corruption and stereotypes of Texas, as well as possible effects of the Bush administration on America.…

At the beginning of my journey through rhetorical analysis, I never imagined the amount of steps it would include. As I learned first about rhetoric itself, and then moved onto adding the elements of rhetoric into my own writing, I soon realized there was a complex web of the writing process that would I have to spin for each essay. The task of successfully writing essays based on the rhetorical analysis of well-known pieces of literature included many vital strategies and techniques that I personally had to implement and improve on along the way. Some steps were new, and some were review; but all were necessary for success. Through my comparing and contrasting essay on the speeches of Patrick Henry and Malcolm X Little, the steps I took to build a successful analysis outlined the learning and writing process taken through the elements of rhetoric.…

Being a first-year college student, you are introduced to the idea of critical thinking early in order to gain intellectual knowledge for creating your own structure of writing. Not only is critical thinking an essential learning process, a student’s ability to understand a comparison of sources is especially imperative for a college education due to a variety of reasons. A rhetorical analysis not only explores the content of a given source, but it also refers to what the author is trying to portray to his or her audience. Learning about the skills of rhetorical analysis teaches you how to apply these comparisons and differentiate between types of writing such as a popular or scientific article. For instance, breaking down the context of a…

In the beginning of the year, I was confused as to how writers could use tactics in order to underscore their arguments. However, by the end of the year, I have started to feel more confident in writing rhetorical analyses, and my writing style has matured to reflect this greater understanding. In my Huckleberry Finn paper, from the beginning of the year, I wrote, “Twain emphasizes [Jim’s affection for Huck] by having Jim prioritize finding Huck over securing the raft.” In this paper, I attempted to analyze the purpose of Huck and Jim’s friendship, yet I never truly tied it back to the significance of Mark Twain’s argument within the novel. My analysis summarized the content of the scene and I attempted to provide a brief explanation of some events, yet I should have focused on the significance of Twain’s language and his use of rhetorical devices (because it’s a rhetorical analysis!).…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

On the first day of class, I felt pretty confident about my level of skills as a writer, but little did I know there were a lot of aspects in my writing that could be improved. As time progressed and we learned more about colloquial language and little things I could change in my essays to further advance and improve my writing. Now, I feel even more confident about my writing and know that all of these little changes I can make in my writing create a better flow of ideas and a higher level of formality. I feel that throughout this semester I have been greatly challenged as a writer and have advanced the most that I ever have in writing within such a short period of time. I have put in a lot time and effort into this class in order to create…

He showed me that with every argument comes a counter argument; adding a counter argument reinforced my argument greatly. Another technique I applied to my essays with Professor Castro’s instruction was planning. In high school, planning an essay seemed like a waste of time because the assignments were always just five paragraph, five sentence essays. Since we had to write these essays in such a short amount of time for tests, I was able to produce the work the night before. On the other hand, Professor Castro has shown the divergence between high school and college; planning and editing are two essential steps in writing.…

Since our first attempt at writing an essay in elementary to middle school, we are told the main components to writing an essay is the ‘beginning’, ‘middle’, and ‘end.’ All of which holds true today, but as we move from one grade to the next, the standards for a ‘good’ essay changes for the better. Rhetorical strategies, devices, and appeals also known as rhetoric, is what we learn in high school (Stotsky 10). The continuation of the expanding knowledge is what makes us alter our writing strategies, from the material taught to us in our adolescent years of elementary school and every year thereafter. It is in high school that we are taught to analyze and dissect the author, as well as the author’s work ceaselessly.…

A lot can happen in just ten short weeks. I feel like I have grown from an amateur writer to a more advanced writer. But do not get me wrong, I know there is still much more room for improvement. The first half of the quarter was focused on the Rhetorical Analysis Essay and the second half was more geared towards the Rhetoric in Practice Project and Essay. At the time, I was just completing these assignments because they were mandatory, but looking back at the quarter I have noticed great improvements and growth not only as a student, but also as a writer.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…
