Simple, Yet Powerful
Since the beginning of the 21st century, infectious diseases have become relatively less of a concern, while chronic diseases continue to grow rapidly throughout the world’s population (Buttar 229). Because of this, it is said that it is “obvious that a population health approach – ‘prevention is better than cure’ – would be the most appropriate model to adopt to deal with this” (Buttar 229), because according to Harpal Buttar, prevention of illness would lead to reduced costs of many factors including hospitalization, long-term medication and rehabilitation (229). According to Javed Butler, “it is estimated that over 5.5 million subjects in the United States have heart failure and more than 650,000 are diagnosed for the first time each year”(1). As the heart failure epidemiology worsens, the importance of prevention has greatly increased. Because of this, many efforts are made to spread the awareness of heart disease prevention including presenting the information through infographics. In the attempt to spread the awareness of this epidemiology, it must be kept in mind that an infographic that isn’t appealing and “attention-drawing” isn’t one that will be effective. The first major element of an effective infographic is one with a subject or topic that can be related to, personally. Most people today know someone, whether it be a friend, family member, friend of a friend, or friend of a family member, that has had some sort of coronary issue. That being said, the hard-cold truth of how serious the coronary epidemic is in our day and what we need to do to lower our risks and prevent problems, is seen by almost everyone. Who wants to have a failing heart? A good guess would be no one, which is exactly why “Your Hardest-Working Organ” portrays an effective subject. While there should not be too many colors used, color can influence how appealing the infographic is as well as the emotion felt, when viewed. As the color of red is usually associated with alertness, it does not go unnoticed that the creators of the infographic used this color on the left side of the graphic. The left divided side of the infographic presents statistics that correspond with the epidemiology of heart problems and addresses the question of whether the audience member is at risk or not. As the red is present, it can induce alertness to the topic and unconsciously influence the audience members’ feelings toward the topic. On the left divided side of the infographic, the beige color influences a more calming sensation, which conveys the infographic’s “bright side” by presenting ways to reduce the risk of coronary issues.
