Preventing Wrong Way Drivers

Imagine driving down the interstate and suddenly you see a car driving on the wrong side of the road at seventy miles per hour. There is no avoiding this car and it smashes into your car creating a fireball of flames and what once was two cars are now intertwined as one pile of smashed metal and flames. It seems so crazy that someone could be driving on the wrong side of the road and not even realize it but this is a common occurrence. Since 2014 there has been over 100 wring way drivers in just the Tampa Bay area. This problem seems so crazy and so unthinkable but it happens more than people realize. That is why they need to install the collapsible spike strips on every highways entry and exit ramps. At many parking lots or garages, they have spikes that when going the right way drop into the ground when a car goes over them. When a car is going the wrong way, the spikes remain and the car’s tires are flattened. Then you just have a broken-down car on a ramp rather than a car speeding down the wrong side of the road. An argument that people have against this idea is that sometimes-emergency vehicles may need to go up the wrong way to get to a crash faster. This can easily be avoided by putting armored tires on emergency vehicles that cannot be popped or cut open. Another argument is that the spikes would require too much maintenance to keep working.
