Preventing VTE in the Hospital Setting
VTE stands for vein thrombosis embolism. Thrombosis is a blood clot that forms in the vein and an embolism is anything that travels through the veins until it gets to a spot where is cannot pass through. Embolism then lodges its self into the vein and occludes blood flow to the rest of that area. “An embolism usually is a piece of blood clot that breaks off but it also can be fat, air, amniotic fluid, a tumor, or a foreign substance such as talc, iodine, cotton, or a tiny piece of catheter tube” (WebMD, 2016). There are several kinds of embolism if is in the deep vein, usually the leg, it would be referred to as deep vein thrombosis if the embolism breaks off and moves to the lungs it is considered to be a pulmonary embolism. “A …show more content…
Well this increases the client’s chances of developing a DVT. Everything went well with the procedure, the client is transferred to his room. Now the clients care is in the nurse’s hand. VTE are one of the number one things hospitals can prevent from occurring while the client is in the hospital. The nurse should consider all six QSEN competences while taking care of the client. The two we are going to be discussing is safety and patient centered care. Safety measures are discussed more in detail above. The nurse could do range of motion exercises with the client but as soon the client is able to get out of the bed and ambulate this will lower the chance of developing an embolism. In the meantime the nurse can have SCDs on the client. You always no matter what need to have patient centered care. When the client and family knows what is going on in the clients care and they have say on what decisions to be made there is a higher hospital stay satisfaction rate. When you preform your client teaching and include both client and family they are more likely to continue the treatment plan once they go
