What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a traumatic brain injury is caused by:
“bump, blow, or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain.”
A “bump, blow, or jolt” to the head is referred to as a closed head injury because the skull is not penetrated. Closed head injuries are common in motor vehicle accidents and slip and fall accidents. It can be very difficult to diagnose a closed head injury because of the lack of obvious trauma to the head. However, a closed head injury can result in serious, long-term conditions that may even result in permanent disabilities. Not every TBI results in a loss of consciousness. You should not assume you did not suffer a brain injury simply because you did not lose consciousness after an accident.
Common symptoms of a TBI include:
• Physical symptoms – Loss of consciousness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, drowsiness, sleeping more than usual, weakness in extremities, seizures, convulsions, difficulty waking up, loss of coordination, and difficulty sleeping
• Sensory symptoms – Blurred vision, ringing in the ears, changes in ability to smell, sensitivity to light, and a bad taste in the mouth
• Mental or cognitive symptoms – Memory problems, confusion, agitation, problems concentrating, depression, anxiety, mood swings, slurred speech, slurred speech, and changes in mood
