Preventing Students from Dropping out of High School
In the midst of experiencing hardships and trying to keep up with school, the easiest decision to make may seem like dropping out of high school. However, that is a decision that will impact a student for the rest of his or her life. After making the decision to drop out of high school, you are going to experience ongoing tribulations, because of not having a high school diploma. Most jobs available require a high school diploma, or a college degree. Education is valued highly in American society, and is a vital ingredient in being successful, which is why it is important that everyone gets an education. If you are having a hard time finding a job, then you’re most likely going to depend on government assistance such as welfare, food stamps, or unemployment checks. A large number of citizens that rely on government assistance get too comfortable with it and become lazy. They might lose their ambition to find a job and then a tax payer’s hard earned money is going to support them, when that money could be used for more important matters. The high school dropout rate greatly affects our economy whether you realize it or not. It shouldn’t be anyone’s goal to drop out of high school, and struggle working a part time job or several just to support yourself and children if you have any. We should all strive for the best. Preventing students from dropping out of high school, and furthering their education to college needs to be a priority within the U.S. These students are our future, and if they cannot even finish high school then our future will not be bright. To effectively help students and prevent them from dropping out, action needs to be taken early. We should not wait until the last minute once a student has decided that they want to drop out to try and stop them. The NEA (National Education Association) suggests that we should, “track student attendance, test scores, grades, behavior referrals, participation in activities, school attitudes and family participation in school events can provide information to identify students most at risk for later dropping out.” (NCHEMS, 2005, p11.). After educators have evaluated the criteria, students who are considered at risk need to be helped immediately. Educators of at risk students need reach out to their parents to have a conference, and discuss the actions that need to be taken to help them succeed. Parents should then take it upon themselves to follow up with their children and make sure they are taking care of business.
