Preventing Mistakes In Nursing

Every mistake made is a new opportunity to learn. Learning from our mistakes is a part of our professional growth. Nurses may show their leadership by becoming part of committees and advisory boards, because volunteering is an additional way to show their leadership skills. In the case of Mr. B, knowing the causes of the errors will help a nurse a leadership role to implement the required interventions to prevent this mistake from happening again. Leadership comes with knowledge and experience. The ER provided the perfect scenario for the nurse to be able and demonstrate her professional leadership, knowledge and competencies. A good leader knows that they cannot handle every single task on the floor. For that reason, they know their staff’s strengths and delegate tasks accordingly to those strengths and the individuals scope of practice. Equally important is a good and effective communication between the different team members. A good leader would communicate with the LPN and guide her/him about what to report to the RN. In this case knowing the importance of advising the RN about Mr. B’s respiratory distress should have happened. In addition, the nurse can show her/his leadership by being proactive. In Mr B’s case scenario, more staff was available, the nurse should take the initiative to call that additional staff to step-in to help delegating tasks accordingly with their scope of practice. In a like manner, nurses can show their leadership advancing in their career and getting new knowledge by being proactive in their own professional advance.
