SUDDEN IMPACT With the debate over concussions and what is being done to prevent them, a new study has shown that out of 91 former deceased National Football League (NFL) players, 87 of those players tested positive for brain disease (Breslow, 2015). Football is growing and changing with each and every game that is played. With that being said, the risk of injury, especially in the head area, is rapidly rising and is very scary to anyone that is playing the game. Now imagine having the biggest and most talented players on the planet smashing each other for 60 whole minutes every game day, pretty scary to picture of isn’t it? Concussions and any head injuries are very easy to come …show more content…
Once a hit is taken by a player, the brain may begin to swell and this is what we call a concussion. A concussion should be taken very seriously because a serious hit can eventually result in life-long injury. With each and every game that is played by a football player, the risk of a concussion or any head injury in that case increases tremendously (Powell). A concussion can occur from a big forceful hit, but it can also come from falling on the ground and knocking your head off of it. A loss of consciousness also happens when a concussion is diagnosed (Powell). This is not known by many people, even those on the field. It isn’t usually known because the loss of consciousness could only be for a few seconds. One of the scariest things to know about having a concussion is that if it becomes serious enough, then it can possibly become deadly (Powell). Now do not think that this happens frequently, because that is not the case. The chance that someone will die from a concussion is very rare and does not happen very often, even if at all. The last thing that should be known about concussions is that there is absolutely no cure for them. The only treatment that is given is to prevent any further injury (Powell). It should also be known that the NFL has among the best of the trainers and/or physicians in the whole world, so they know what they are doing …show more content…
Former NFL players are now at the time in their life when the long-term injuries are starting to become apparent. Most of them are just talking about concussions and how they have affected their lives, but some of them have some form of disease that has negatively affected their lives (Breslow). One big name player that has come out and spoken was Brett Favre. Favre spoke to a news station and talked about how he has been losing some memory especially short term memory, and he is very worried that his brain damage might worsen (Breslow). Anyone that could experience how football has affected their heads, would absolutely rethink about playing it. Another former NFL player that has had head injuries that have affected his life in football and outside of football is Wes Welker. Welker was diagnosed with 2 concussions in one season. After this happened, a spark of interest in research of head injuries occurred (Breslow). A few weeks after Wes Welker was diagnosed, 3 of the NFL’s former stars are diagnosed with CTE, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (Breslow). This is a very critical disease that is diagnosed so they had to take it seriously. Keep in note, that all of these diseases diagnosed are because of the head injuries that happened before. Since Wes Welker, the case of concussions and what is being done to prevent them was taken to court because the NFL is “ignoring”
