In “Social Media and Suicide: A Public Health Perspective” written by David D. Luxton Ph.D., the article discusses the pressures that are being found through the use of social media outlets. Luxton writes, about how a large amount of low self-esteem can cause people to turn to social media outlets and the internet for answers. After conducting a research study, a group of scientists found that web searching 12 suicide-related words gave an immense quantity of information. Following that web search, the researchers analyzed the sites and found that more of them stood at a suicide neutral position even while some of the sites were pro-suicide.(Luxton). Suicide is caused mostly by low self-esteem and other causes. “More than 30 000 suicide deaths in the United States and nearly 1 million suicide deaths worldwide occur every year,”(Luxton). according to Luxton. This creates a need for people to understand that the pressure to be perfect or someone that a person can not be can cause low self-esteem.
