After gaining freedom, the reaction amongst slaves was very varied. Most slaves were joyous and happy being freed, some even taking out their pent up anger out on their former slave owners. However some some had grown a strong connection to their slave owners, choosing to instead stay with their masters and assume more of a worker job instead of being a slave. In addition to that, many freed blacks joined the army, enlisting in the union troops. Most enjoyed a new free life with many new amenities and luxuries like new names, jobs, reunion with loved ones. When Johnson came in, he decided to switch things up. He started to disregarding the rule of many confederate leaders and and advocated for the states to repeal their secession decision, pay up for debts to be let back in to the union.

The president overall was way more forgiving and lenient in his plans for reconstruction. He gave the south much more time to adapt and change back to life under the union and he also gave the southern citizens more rights and let them continue their way of life. However, Congress was a little more harsh with the south and with the idea of reconstruction. They encroached the south and put military pressure on them with a military law. They also gave the south a more abrupt and radical change to their social culture.

Many of the blacks in the south decided to unite with northerners to run for the presidency. At the small level, black men and women served in town assemblies and were usually the most active and passionate at meetings. President Johnson was a very ineffective and brought disgrace to the presidency.
He also violated many legislation and rules, the biggest violation was when he fired somebody who was protected by his tenure. He fired Edward Stanton, who was secretary of war and was protected under the tenure of office act.
