I unintentionally won a presidential election. Poster boards, a strong speech, campaign cards, and a desire to experience something I’d never experienced before fueled my accidental competitiveness. My one reason for participating was because I thought it’d be a fun thing to experience. Not once did intend or even tease myself with the idea of winning. One of the greatest memories I have to date taught me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things because you lose 100% of the chances you fail to take. This story had its genesis my 10th grade year at Southside High School. As it was time to elect new student body officials I calmly made my way through the large, congested halls enduring the occasional shoulder bumps and traffic jams that would occur. With nothing better to do and a lack of homework I thought, “Wow. Wouldn’t it be fun to take part in a presidential election?! I’d never win though. But who ever said you had to want to win to run? Besides, the excitement is a win in itself.” Boom, just like that, at a moment’s thought, I had decided I was going to run for Southside High School’s student body president. As I now was moving through the halls in a hurriedly manner I approached my classroom and made my way to my seat and began crafting my speech. At the conclusion of class I stopped by the main office to fill out a form ensuring my spot in the election. I then spent my entire lunch creating and handing out posters and cards for my campaign.
