During the early 1930’s with the help of President Roosevelt and scientists who feared the atomic bomb development from Germany, the United States began studying the atomic bomb. In August 1942 the U.S. launched a development program called the Manhattan Project. With the death of President Roosevelt, Truman once being sworn into the presidency was immediately informed that the United States was working on perfecting a nuclear bomb that would cause major destruction. Harry Truman’s presidency began under the cloud of Franklin D. Roosevelt. There were two things that president Truman set out to accomplish as President of the United States. The first one was to win the war with Japan – and we were winning it. The next one is to win a peace.

President Truman did what he thought was best for our country, he wanted to end the war and after several attempts in trying to get the Japanese to surrender they still refused. Therefore, we had to stop them before things got out of hand. Why would we risk hundreds of innocent lives when it’s unnecessary, yes the enemy would suffer casualties, but in the long haul members of our nation would be safe. However I would say that under the circumstance many believed Japan was clearly beaten, as was likely to surrender in a matter of months. Americans were tired of being in a war, but lasting this long and being successful this far we could of last a little longer without causing so many casualties. Personally, I would of tried to prevent as little casualties by dragging it out a little longer since they would eventually run out of materials. Many Americans wanted war to be over, stating, “ Lets get it over with for the sake of the country.” Truman helped give the people what they wanted meanwhile doing under his terms and what would benefit the country the
