Eventually, the students agreed to let the hostages go on January 19, 1981 if Iran gained 8 billion dollars in its own frozen assets and the embargo was removed. They were not released until January 20, President Ronald Reagan's inauguration day. Some people believe that Iran waited to release the hostages as a punishment to Jimmy Carter for his support of the Shah, and others believe in the October Surprise Conspiracy Theory. An October Surprise is a political incident that is arranged before an election to try to change the results of it. In the October Surprise Conspiracy Theory, it is believed that Reagan's presidential campaign came to an agreement with Iran to stall the release of the American Diplomates to stop President Jimmy …show more content…
This was a little less than a year after Iranian students captured American Diplomates. Since Iran and America were now at conflict with each other, Iraq's leader (Saddam Hussein) took this opportunity to take participate in internationalism. As result of America being mad at Iran, America supplied Iraqis with things such as helicopters and satellite intelligence so Iraq knew where to bomb. Some politicians were removed from the political picture in Iran because they were accused or were associating with America. The Government of Iran also encourages people to go to the American Embassy once a year to burn the American flag and chant "Death To America". The United States Embassy building is now used by the Government of Iran and affiliated groups, and is a museum regarding the Iranian Revolution. Now, the United States government is represented in Iran through United States Interests Section of the Embassy of Switzerland in Iran and through the Iranian Interests Section in the Pakistan Embassy to keep relations stable between America and Iran. This is a photo of one of the funerals for the soldiers and civilians that were killed in the brutal war between Iran and Iraq.
